Job Description

The Electricity Infrastructure Group is currently looking for a Power System Research Engineer with a strong background in power systems and electromagnetic effects to join our Integration team. The position will focus on making technical contributions to ongoing and new research projects by modeling the effects of electromagnetics, electromagnetic pulses (EMP), geomagnetic disturbances (GMD), and transients on our nation’s electric grid critical infrastructure.

The desired engineer will:

  • Demonstrate technical knowledge with a focus on modeling the effects of electromagnetics, EMP, GMD, and transients, as it relates to the operation of the electric grid including operations, reliability, resiliency, and asset protection.

  • Assist the development of new business by contributing to proposals.

  • Work with colleagues and external collaborators to develop innovative solutions to emerging challenges facing the power industry.

  • Contribute to the development of technical strategies.

  • Effectively communicate with senior engineers to ensure high-quality delivery of research projects on budget and on time.

  • Publish research outcomes in peer-reviewed journals, conferences, etc.

  • Mentor and direct junior staff in various projects.

  • Present and promote PNNL research agenda and products in professional communities, e.g., IEEE, CIGRE, industry workshops, etc.

Minimum Qualifications

  • BS/BA with 5 years of experience, MS/MA with 3 years of experience, or PhD with 1 year of experience.

  • Technical knowledge in power system simulation, analysis, dynamics or control.

  • Modeling electromagnetics, EMP, and transients experience. Proficient with EMTP-type simulation tools such as ATP, PSCAD, Opal-RT and EMTP-RV, etc.

  • Experience with computational electromagnetics, e.g. finite element, finite difference, microwave or antenna design tools.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering with 1+ years of experience;

  • Knowledge and experience in power system electromagnetic, transient modeling and simulation;

  • Strong programming ability, e.g., Fortran, C/ C++, Python, JAVA, MATLAB, etc.;

  • Established publication record; and

  • Experience working with the power industry.
