The Electricity Infrastructure Group is currently looking for a Power System Research Engineer with a strong background in power systems and knowledge in machine learning or data analytics to join our Analytics team. The position will focus on making technical contributions to ongoing research projects in the areas of applied machine learning and advanced analytics for power system modeling, analysis and control.

The desired engineer will:

  • Demonstrate technical knowledge with a focus on machine learning or data analytics as it relates to the operation of the electric grid including operations, markets, and planning.

  • Assist the development of new business by contributing to proposals.

  • Work with colleagues and external collaborators to develop innovative solutions to emerging challenges facing the power industry.

  • Contribute to the development of technical strategies.

  • Effectively communicate with senior engineers to ensure high-quality delivery of research projects on budget and on time.

  • Publish research outcomes in peer-reviewed journals, conferences, etc.

  • Mentor and direct junior staff in various projects.

  • Present and promote PNNL research agenda and products in professional communities, e.g., IEEE, CIGRE, industry workshops, etc.

Minimum Qualifications

  • BS/BA with 2 years of experience , MS/MA with 0 years of experience, or PhD with 0 years of experience.

  • Technical knowledge in power system simulation, analysis, dynamics or control.

  • Machine learning or data analytics experience. Proficient with machine learning and/or data analytics tools such as Tensorflow, Pytorch, Scikit-learn, R, etc.

  • Experience with multiple power systems simulation tools such as PSLF, PSS/E, PowerWorld, MATPOWER, etc.

  • Experience with power-related optimization tools, such as GAMS, CPLEX, etc.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering with 1+ years of experience;

  • Knowledge and experience in power system dynamics, modeling and simulation;

  • Strong programming ability, e.g., Python, C++, JAVA, MATLAB, etc.;

  • Established publication record; and

  • Experience working with the power industry.
