Job Description

The Electricity Infrastructure Group at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is currently seeking an experienced Power Systems Engineer with strong communication skills who proactively solves problems. The position will focus on performing research related to modeling and control of generation, transmission, or distribution systems. Based on the candidate’s unique skills, experience, and education the position can be based at the PNNL campus location in Richland, WA.

  • Provide subject matter expertise with a focus on power system models, algorithms, optimization and/or controls for power system planning and operations.

  • Form and contribute to interdisciplinary teams to tackle high impact problems.

  • Assist in developing new funding opportunities, working with business development leads to expand research portfolio.

  • Creatively innovate new technical solutions.

  • Contribute to individual projects; including working independently with other staff, communicating with clients, and assisting in ensuring milestones are met on schedule and budget.

  • Contribute to project management plans for small to moderate multi-disciplinary projects.

  • Publish research results and be accountable for ensuring the quality of products that result from the research performed.

  • Prioritize concurrent assignments and exercise judgement on research conduct.

  • Mentor junior staff.

  • Collaborate with senior staff from across the lab and outside PNNL.

  • Ensure safe operating practices are followed on the projects.

  • Demonstrate the upmost professional integrity.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree with 2+ years of experience, or an advanced degree.

  • US Citizenship required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in Electrical Engineering is preferred.

  • Power system planning experience with utility or independent system operator.

  • Strong background in the application of optimization techniques to power systems engineering.

  • Experience using multiple power systems tools such as PSLF, PSS/E, PSCad, PowerWorld, GridLAB-D, MatPower, PROMOD, Plexos, RTDS, Opal-RT, etc.

  • Active in IEEE Power and Energy Society, or comparable organization.

  • Strong programming ability.

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a federal security clearance.


  • U.S. Citizenship

  • Background Investigation: Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter in accordance 10 CFR 710, Appendix B.

  • Drug Testing: All Security Clearance (L or Q) positions will be considered by the Department of Energy to be Testing Designated Positions which means that they are subject to applicant, random, and for cause drug testing. In addition, applicants must be able to demonstrate non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for the 12 consecutive months preceding completion of the requisite Questionnaire for National Security Positions (QNSP).
