The Electricity Infrastructure Group is currently seeking a Power Systems Research Engineer with a background in power systems and knowledge in cybersecurity for energy systems. The position will focus on making technical contributions to ongoing research projects in cybersecurity for energy systems, writing technical papers and reports, and generating new ideas and research avenues. The desired engineer will:
Provide technical leadership and subject matter expertise with a focus on cybersecurity as it relates to operation of electric grid including operations, markets, and planning.
Assist the development of new business by contributing to or leading proposals.
Work with colleagues and external collaborators to develop innovative solutions to emerging challenges facing the power industry.
Lead and manage small- to medium-sized projects or tasks.
Assist senior management in developing technical strategies.
Effectively communicate with senior engineers to ensure high-quality delivery of research projects on budget and on time.
Publish research outcomes in peer-reviewed journals, conferences, etc.
Mentor and direct junior staff in various projects.
Present and promote PNNL research agenda and products in professional communities, e.g., IEEE, CIGRE, industry workshops, etc

The hiring level will be determined based on the education, experience, and skill set of the successful candidate based on the following:
Level 2: Building reputation through application of S&E principles and theories, and developing technical approaches. Effectively teaming to share resources and optimize research at the group and division level. Receives guidance on new assignments, making preliminary selections on technical alternatives; independently completes recurring assignments. Defines and leads project work at a small task/project level, reporting results on time and on budget. Contributes to proposals.
Level 3: Making key contributions in setting technical direction. Manages small to moderate projects and/or major project tasks. Integrates intellectual and technical capabilities of work teams. Enhances technical/professional skills of junior staff through active mentoring and training. Generates ideas for new proposals and participates in business development activities.
- Bachelor's degree with at least 2+ years of experience, or a Master's degree with 0+ years of experience, or a PhD with 0+ years of experience.
Bachelor's degree with at least 5+ years of experience, or a Master's degree with 3+ years of experience, or a PhD with 1+ years of experience.
Technical expertise in power systems and security of power systems, Experience with power industry in variable energy integration
Cyber security experience, with researching, building or implementing OT relevant cybersecurity policies, controls. Network or host based experience with scanning/ assessment tools, monitoring, pen testing, network protocols preferred.
Proficient in (a) power system generation, transmission and load simulation and/or modeling; (b) power system market simulation and/or modeling; and/or (c) generation, transmission and/or load control design and modeling.
Experience with multiple power systems packages such as PSLF, PSS/E, PSCAD, PowerWorld, DSA Tools, GAMS, MATPOWER, PROMOD, Plexos, etc.
Experience with network simulators such as ns-3, Mininet, Common Open Research Emulator (CORE), etc
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Strong publication record
Knowledge and experience in power system networks, dynamics, modeling and simulation; and
Strong programming ability, e.g., python, C++, JAVA, MATLAB, etc.
