Job Description

The Radiological Materials Group is seeking a post-masters candidate to assist with the synthesis and characterization of boro-silicate glasses and cementitious materials. These materials are being designed to immobilize nuclear wastes to make them safe for disposal. The work requires precise attention to detail, rigorous documentation and recording of data; high standards of excellence in cleanliness, adherence to high standards of safety and operational awareness, and a willingness to learn and develop outstanding proficiency in assigned tasks. Activities will include precision measurement chemicals (powders and liquids), blending components, melting them in high temperature furnaces, pouring glass, and mixing caustic mineral mixtures such as Ordinary Portland Cement to form cementitious. Characterization of these materials will include metallographic preparation of specimens for microstructural and micro-chemical analysis, optical and scanning electron microscopy, electron probe microanalysis, x-ray diffraction, and a variety of chemical durability tests.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must have received a Master’s degree within the past 24 months or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university. Minimum overall GPA of 3.0 required.

Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated proficiency in analytical electron microscopy is absolutely necessary. Experience working in a precision work environment with high quality controls is preferred. Experience in presenting technical work at conferences and involvement in professional societies is a plus.

Candidates must have an academic background in one or more of the following areas: materials science, ceramics, geology, chemistry, or chemical engineering.
