Job Description

The Applied Materials & Performance group at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is seeking a materials engineer to work as an integrated member of its Materials Development and Testing Team. This position will collaborate with highly diverse research staff in the areas of materials processing, design and development of dies/tools, microstructural characterization, and analysis of structural and nuclear materials. The position holder will mentor graduate and undergraduate students, publish findings in the scientific literature, and give presentations at conferences and to sponsors.

Develop and execute experimental plans that characterize the performance of materials through structure/property relationships. Carry out laboratory work independently and with the support of other technical staff. Effectively communicate results of research and plans with project manager and in regular team meetings.

Lead efforts in materials characterization, including various metallography techniques, optical microscopy, SEM, TEM, XRD, and surface characterization techniques.


Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must have received a Master’s degree within the past 24 months or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university. Minimum overall GPA of 3.0 required.


Preferred Qualifications

Prior materials processing knowledge (in particular, with metals) and experience with either rolling, forging, friction stir welding, and casting will be beneficial. Strong background in materials characterization including but not limited to optical microscopy, SEM, XRD, TEM and surface characterization techniques. Extensive knowledge and hands-on skills in material preparation, processing, and mechanical properties testing required.

Master’s in Metallurgy, Materials Science and Engineering, or related field from an accredited college or university.
