Job Description

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is seeking post-graduate students who have a passion for solving complex problems in national security. Research Associates work side-by-side with staff members to aid various government sponsors including the U.S. Department of Energy, National Nuclear Security Administration, Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Defense, and other agencies. Technical work conducted will support federally funded research projects across a broad range of topics including, but not limited to: WMD proliferation, disruptive technologies, law enforcement, and counterterrorism. The incumbent is expected to produce high-quality assessments by researching, evaluating, and integrating all-source data to produce information and/or policy briefs for decision makers. Some tasks may require fine motor skills and manual dexterity for hands-on design work, modification, or installation of equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must have received a Master’s degree within the past 24 months or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university. Minimum overall GPA of 3.0 required.

This position may require the ability to obtain a future U.S. Federal Security Clearance in a timely manner. Continued employment is contingent on the ability to attain and maintain required clearances.

Preferred Qualifications

Excellent oral and written communication skills with a demonstrated ability for writing policy-oriented briefs and/or technical project documentation in a clear and understandable manner.

Technical experience with one or more of the following is desired: sensor deployment and/or troubleshooting, UAS operations, physical security system installation and testing, and scenario analysis and risk management.

Preferred Education/Credential

Seeking candidates with a Master’s degree granted in the past 24 months or within the next 3 months in the following disciplines: national security, homeland security defense, emergency management, critical infrastructure protection, law enforcement/criminal justice, intelligence analysis, cybersecurity, or counter-terrorism.

Foreign language skills (e.g., French, Russian, Arabic, Chinese).

Knowledge of one or more specialized programming languages or software packages (e.g., R, Python, GIS) are a plus.

Coursework or experience with health physics, nuclear engineering, or radiation science are valuable but not required. Cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher preferred.

Special/Hazardous Working Conditions or Environment

Some tasks may require fine motor skills and manual dexterity for hands-on design work, modification, or installation of equipment.

This position will be expected to work with non-sensitive, sensitive, and classified information as appropriate for individual projects and the incumbent should demonstrate an ability to manage sensitive business situations and influence positive outcomes. The person in this position must recognize and accept that they will be working in technical areas associated with the National Security of the United States.
