The position is for a trace analytical chemist to perform and develop sample separation, preparation, and analysis techniques. The work is in support of analytical method and procedure development for trace elemental and isotopic analysis, typically by mass spectrometry. The incumbent will be expected to perform hands-on wet chemistry, operate thermal-ionization mass spectrometers (TIMS) and contribute to proposal development efforts.
Candidates must have received a Master’s degree within the past 24 months or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university. Minimum overall GPA of 3.0 required.
Must be able to obtain a future security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.
The incumbent must have a M.S. or equivalent degree in the physical sciences (analytical, radio, nuclear, or geochemistry preferred). Experience working with chemicals in a laboratory setting is required. Strong written and oral communication skills and the ability to work both with minimal supervision and within teams are required. Candidate must have excellent attention to detail and demonstrated ability for meticulous, reproducible work and documentation. Experience working in clean rooms, with radioactive materials, trace or micro chemistry techniques, chemical separations, and mass spectrometry (thermal ionization or multi-collector ICP-MS) are desired. Preference will be given to individuals with quantitative and instrumental analysis, isotope ratio or geochronometry experience.
