Job Description

The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is a multi-program laboratory operated by Battelle for the US DOE. The Chemical and Biological Signatures Group (CBS) is an interdisciplinary group of approximately 60 researchers who solve research and development problems related to chemical and biological detection and forensics. Much of the work is directed toward national security missions to prevent and counter acts of terrorism and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

The CBS (Chemical and Biological Signatures) Group is seeking data scientists with expertise in bioinformatics/data science for omics fields (proteomics, genomics, metabolomics, or transcriptomics) with an interest in solving real-world problems in national security and bioforensics. The successful candidate will be a member of an integrated, interdisciplinary team of biochemists, analytical chemists, microbiologists, mass spectrometrists, and data scientists. Candidates with experience in other genomics and metabolomics fields will also be considered.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Analyzing mass spectrometry results using a variety of omics software tools, and evaluating and comparing the results

  • Writing code to organize, query, and further analyze results from proteomics tools

  • Presenting and summarizing scientific results to project managers and interdisciplinary team members

  • Seeking, implementing, and evaluating potential solutions from the scientific literature

  • Working in technical teams to complete various project tasks on time and within scope and budget

  • Recommending technical approaches and making technical contributions that may ultimately affect the direction of the research

  • Thoroughly documenting experiments and publishing data analysis methods

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must have received a Master’s degree within the past 24 months or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university. Minimum overall GPA of 3.0 required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong competency and experience with coding/scripting languages such as R or Python

  • Experience in a scientific research project or thesis project involving biological sequence data is preferred

  • Experience with one or more open-source/academic or commercial omics software tools is preferred

  • Experience with machine learning approaches in bioinformatics is desirable

  • Experience contributing to peer-reviewed publications or technical reports

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Experience simultaneously balancing multiple projects and tasks is preferred

  • Experience working in multi-disciplinary teams is preferred

Preferred Education

  • Master’s degree in bioinformatics, biology, biochemistry, or a related field. Cumulative GPA of 3.5 or highe preferred.
