Job Description

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is recruiting postdoctoral scientists with the goal of improving tools for intra-day and day ahead forecasts of both the solar and wind resource. The successful candidate will perform analysis of observations and design and execute modeling experiments using the WRF and/or WRF-LES model in a number of ways, including: improving the understanding of turbulent inflow to wind plants, turbine wakes, developing and testing new and improved parameterizations for both wind and solar power, and uncertainty quantification. A successful candidate will join a team of researchers with a broad range of interests and expertise and is expected to publish his/her work in peer reviewed journals.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Demonstrated familiarity with numerical models and analysis of mesoscale simulations, as well as observations

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English

  • Ability to work collaboratively in interdisciplinary teams as well as ability to independently pursue original ideas and new directions

  • Interest in contributing to an active intellectual environment

  • Demonstrated record of publications in peer reviewed journals


  • Demonstrated expertise in parameterizations of clouds and radiation relevant for intra-day and day-ahead forecasts of solar irradiance

  • Familiarity with high performance computing, the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model, and statistical analysis

  • Experience with in situ and/or remote sensing data sets

  • Experience with computer languages usually used for modeling and analysis (Fortran, Python, R, NCL, Matlab, IDL, etc.)

  • Familiarity with Linux/Unix computational environments

  • Research experience in boundary layer meteorology, especially for complex terrain or air- sea interaction

A Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science, Physics, Applied Mathematics, Statistics or related subjects is required.
