Pacific Northwest National Laboratory Post Doctorate RA - Watershed Hydrobiogeochemical Modeling in RICHLAND, Washington

Organization and Job ID

Job ID: 308665

Directorate: Earth & Biological Sciences

Division: Atmospheric Sciences & Global Change

Group: Advanced Study & Development

Job Description

The candidate for this position will study the hydrologic and biogeochemical processes associated with river-groundwater exchange at watershed scale utilizing a suite of simulation codes, for example, subsurface flow and reactive transport code PFLOTRAN, Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT), WRF-Hydro, and their equivalents. The candidate will be expected to participate in the development of novel conceptual models for modeling real-world flow and biogeochemical transport at various catchments within the Columbia River Basin. The candidate will work with a multi-disciplinary team of computational and experimental scientists to understand how the watershed-scale hydrologic and nutrient cycling is impacted by the hydrologic exchanges between the surface water and groundwater. This position will require numerical modeling, data analyses and visualization in a high performance computing environment.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.

Preferred Qualifications

Candidates must have received a PhD in Watershed Hydrology, Biogeochemistry, Geoscience, Engineering (Civil, Geological, or Environmental), or related field.

The candidate must have (1) a background in watershed hydrology, geohydrology, or biogeochemical modeling; (2) experience in independently designing conceptual model of a complex system and implementing in simulation codes; (3) fluency in one or more programming or scripting languages; and (4) excellent written and oral communication skills as evidenced by publications in top-tier journals and presentations at professional conferences.

Candidates that demonstrate any or all of the following are preferred: (1) strong skills in independent conceptual model development at multiple scales (e.g. gridding/meshing, mapping of boundary and initial conditions, source sinks); (2) experience using WRF-Hydro, SWAT, CLM, PFLOTRAN or equivalent; (2) strong statistical data analysis and visualization skills; (3) Fluency with R or Python; (4) fluency with the Linux operating system, parallel programming paradigms on high-performance computers.
