Job Description

We are searching for an outstanding candidate for a postdoctoral position working on using in-situ scanning/transmission electron microscopy (S/TEM) coupled with machine learning to study energy materials and solid-liquid-gas interactions, typically such as rechargeable batteries and catalytic processes. Emphasis will be on using in-situ (gas-liquid cell) and ex-situ S/TEM, environmental TEM (ETEM), electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), and EDS to combine with machine learning to probe into the structural and chemical evolution of energy materials under dynamic operation conditions.

The candidate should have in depth knowledge and extensive practical experience in operation of the state-of-the-art aberration corrected S/TEM and ETEM, which includes imaging and spectroscopy of TEM, STEM, EELS, and EDS, S/TEM image simulation and 3D imaging. Practical hands-on experience in the operation of probe- corrected and monochromated TEM/STEM, image corrected TEM, nanoscale, nanomanipulation within S/TEM and ETEM, gas and liquid cell S/TEM, cryo-TEM, and SEM/FIB for preparation and lift out of specimens is needed to successfully perform the experiments. Knowledge of machine learning, electrochemistry, catalyst, battery devices fabrication and testing as evidenced by peer reviewed publications, will be advantages. Some experience on structural and chemical characterization using tools including APT, XRD, XPS and SIMS along with property measurements, in particular, electrochemical properties is a plus. The candidate is also expected to help others in the TEM lab to operate the microscope. The position is for 1 year and may be extended for a total of up to 3 years.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.

Preferred Qualifications

Must have completed extensive material science research using S/TEM, ETEM, EELS, EDS, gas-liquid cell S/TEM, Cryo-S/TEM, SEM-FIB lift-out. Experience with machine learning, electrochemistry, battery devices fabrication and testing is preferred.

Ph.D. in material science, physics, chemistry or related field
