Job Description

The Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL) seeks an outstanding candidate for a postdoctoral position working on developing and utilizing spatially resolved mass spectrometry (MS) methods for understanding complex processes related to interkingdom biome interactions, human health, and atmospheric aerosol chemistry. Emphasis will be focused on developing and utilizing ambient ionization MS capabilities and microscopy approaches in a multimodal fashion to generate information about samples beyond what can be obtained from a single technique. The candidate will be responsible for aiding in the advancement and development of the ever-expanding spatial omics suite, which currently includes a number of mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) capabilities (LAESI, NanoDESI, MALDI, and SIMS) and unique minimum volume spatially resolved omics modalities (LCM-NanoPOTS, LESA) and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).

The candidate should have a record of accomplishment in the development and/or applications of mass spectrometry modalities. An ideal candidate will have expertise in MS (and MSI), instrument development, MS sample preparation methods, data acquisition, processing and analysis. The candidate should possess good oral and written communication skills and strong interpersonal skills. Experience with utilization of MS capabilities in above mentioned research areas is preferred.

The successful candidate will possess strong organizational and time management skills; the ability to multi-task; demonstrated ability to make independent and well-informed analyses and decisions; and excellent written and oral communication skills. Experience working on interdisciplinary teams and/or inter-institutional teams, is preferred.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.

Preferred Qualifications

Must have direct experience and expertise in at least one field related to mass spectrometry or instrument development.

Preferred Education/Credential:

Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years in chemistry, biochemistry, biophysics, physics, material science, or related field.
