Job Description

The Atmospheric Sciences and Global Change Division at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) seeks a motivated postdoctoral research associate to develop and evaluate improved parameterizations for aerosols and aerosol-cloud interactions for the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM; see http://e3sm.org at http://e3sm.org/ for more information), as part of the “Enabling Aerosol-cloud interactions at GLobal convection-permitting scalES (EAGLES)” project. Targeted at DOE’s leadership computing facilities (e.g., GPU-based systems), the EAGLES project seeks to develop scientifically robust and computational efficient parameterizations to represent aerosols and aerosol-cloud interactions with a focus on liquid clouds.

The successful candidate will work with the EAGLES team to develop new data-driven process representations for aerosols and aerosol-cloud interactions using novel machine learning techniques based on LES and observations. S/he will implement the new parameterizations in E3SM, evaluate the new model (using regional refined mesh), and assess their impacts on weather and climate.

The candidate should have demonstrated experience in atmospheric model development, evaluation, and analysis. In addition, the candidate needs to understand the complex interactions among various processes that control the cloud and aerosol lifecycle. Proficiency with FORTRAN is required. Experience with C++ is desirable.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.

Preferred Qualifications

Required qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. in atmospheric science, geoscience, environmental science, hydrology, civil and environmental engineering, or a related field

  • Demonstrated experience in atmospheric model development, evaluation, and analysis

  • Demonstrated experience in aerosol physics and aerosol-cloud interactions

  • Fluency in Fortran and Python/shell scripting

Preferred qualification:

  • Experience with C++ Experience with machine learning techniques

  • Experience with LES

  • Experience with high-performance computing environments

  • Strong interpersonal communication skills

  • Ability to publish work in peer-reviewed journals

  • Strong team player with the willingness and ability to work independently
