Job Description

This position is for a radiochemist to participate in a wide variety of research and development efforts involving radiochemistry, analytical chemistry, and mass spectrometry for characterization, quantitative, and forensic analysis of nuclear material in environmental matrices, including the development of novel separation technologies for the Radiochemical Analysis (RA) group.

This position will include both experimental and theoretical studies, with applications including national and homeland security with an emphasis on nuclear security and energy. Both independently and in collaboration with project teams, the position will support a range of US government and private clients. The research group seeking to fill this position supports a number of critical national security missions along with missions relating to environmental monitoring, isotope production, next generation nuclear fuel cycles, and international nuclear safeguards and treaty monitoring. Projects within the research group range from highly applied projects in support of the U.S. Government to fundamental projects in the areas of nuclear science and novel technology exploration.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.

Must be able to obtain and maintain qualifications to work with radiological materials.

Preferred Qualifications

The top candidate will have a growing record of independent contributions to research programs and possess the ability to interact with dynamic, multi-disciplinary teams. Experience working with chemicals and dispersible radioactive materials in a laboratory setting is required. Experience handling radioactive materials and performing separations and chemical/instrumental analysis on these materials including molecular and chemical analytical techniques in support of characterization of nuclear or radioactive particles and debris is especially desired.

Must have strong written and oral communication skills and the ability to work both with minimal supervision and within teams. The top candidate must have excellent attention to detail and a demonstrated ability for meticulous, reproducible work and documentation.

Position may include, but not limited to:

  • Nanomaterials and nanoparticulate synthesis and analysis; including bottom-up design, construction, and production of inorganic engineered nanomaterials.

  • Work with radioactive materials, potentially in Contamination Area Fume Hoods; requiring strong radiological worker skills.

  • Chemical and physical hazards would be those expected in a traditional wet chemistry lab.

Preferred Education

  • PhD in Analytical Chemistry, Geochemistry (isotope geochemist preferred), Radiochemistry, Nuclear Engineering, or related technical field.
