This position is for a scientist to participate in a wide variety of research and development efforts involving mass spectrometry and analytical chemistry for characterization, quantitative, and forensic analysis of nuclear material in environmental matrices. This work includes the development of novel method and detection technologies for nuclear material analysis within the Radiochemical Analysis (RA) group.
This position will include both method development and testing as well as instrumentation development, with applications including national and homeland security with an emphasis on nuclear security and energy. The position will support a range of US government and private client projects, both independent and in collaboration with other project teams. The research group seeking to fill this position supports a number of critical national security missions along with missions relating to environmental monitoring, isotope detection, next generation nuclear fuel cycles, and international nuclear safeguards and treaty monitoring. Projects within the research group range from highly applied projects in support of the U.S. Government to fundamental projects in the areas of nuclear science and novel technology exploration.
Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.
Candidates must have the ability to obtain a future security clearance, U.S. citizenship required.
The top candidate will have a growing record of independent contributions to research programs and possess the ability to interact with dynamic, multi-disciplinary teams. Experience working with mass spectrometers, ion detection equipment, and vacuum systems in a laboratory setting is required. It is also desired for candidates to have experience with laser ablation ICPMS methods and practices, preferably multicollector ICPMS, and be adept at sample handling, possibly including radioactive materials, and sample preparation.
Must have strong written and oral communication skills and the ability to work both with minimal supervision and within teams. The top candidate must have excellent attention to detail and a demonstrated ability for meticulous, reproducible work and documentation.
Position may include, but not limited to:
Nanomaterials and nanoparticulate analysis.
Work with radioactive materials.
Chemical and physical hazards would be those expected in a traditional physical chemistry lab.
- PhD in Physical Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Geochemistry (isotope geochemist), Radiochemistry, Nuclear Engineering, or related technical field. Cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher preferred.
