Job Description

A postdoctoral position is now open for a biophysical chemist to study the structure and function of biomineralization proteins. The position is as a member of a joint experimental/theoretical team focusing on the secondary, tertiary and quaternary structural characterization of biomineralization proteins and how they relate to the function of the protein. The focus of this position is to develop a molecular level understanding of the protein-surface interface using solid state NMR. The candidate will purify peptides and proteins, prepare surface adsorbed samples and characterize the prepared samples using dipolar recoupling methods and 2D/3D protein structure characterization methods. A variety of other techniques, including solution state NMR, CD, AFM, SEM and TEM may be used to characterize the structure and evaluate the interaction mechanism. Investigating the functions of nucleation and growth and relating these to structural changes may also be undertaken. The work will be carried out in synergy with other team members who are investigating the quaternary structures of the protein, as well as characterization of the solubilized structure.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.

Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.

Preferred Qualifications

2D/3D NMR structural characterization of proteins strongly preferred.

Experience with peptide synthesis techniques and protein expression is highly desirable. Experience handling peptides and proteins is required.

Excellent oral and written communications skills are mandatory.

Experience with a range of analytical techniques such as Circular Dichroism, HPLC, AFM, SEM and TEM, is desirable.

Experience with computational methods is desired.

Preferred Education: PhD in Physical Chemistry or Biochemistry

An ideal candidate would have:

Expertise in solid state NMR

Experience with dipolar recoupling methods

Experience in preparing and handling peptides and proteins.
