Job Description

The Applied Radiation Detection (ARD) Group at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is focused on the development of technology supporting applied radiation measurements. Projects within the group range from highly applied projects in support of international treaties and national security to fundamental science projects in the areas of nuclear science, novel sensor technology development, and machine learning algorithms.

The ARD Group is seeking postdoctoral candidates who will contribute to a wide variety of research, development, testing, and evaluation efforts involving radiation detection systems, methodologies, and algorithms. The successful candidate should have experience in:

  • Analysis of radioactive spectra (preferably noble gas) to calculate activities and concentrations

  • Development, construction, and operation of radiation detectors (preferably radioxenon or other radioactive noble gas detectors)

  • Simulation of radiation detectors to aid in design and characterization

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.

Candidates must have the ability to obtain a future security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.

Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated experience in one or more of the following is preferred:

  • Operation, construction, design optimization, and calibration of radiation detectors

  • Operation of gas processing systems

  • Experience in developing algorithms for nuclear data analysis (nuclear spectroscopy)

Desirable Qualifications

  • Proficiency in programming (Python, ROOT, Fortran, C++, Geant4, MCNP)

  • Experience in uncertainty quantification

  • Demonstrated creativity and highly developed problem-solving skills

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to team

Preferred Education/Credential

Ph.D. in Physics, Nuclear Engineering; will also consider candidates possessing Ph.D. in related field with demonstrated experience in radiation detection. Cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher preferred.
