This position will involve design, fabrication, and evaluation of novel acoustic/optic sensors. Sensor design work will require proficiency with acoustic and electromechanical modeling suites such as ANSYS and other tools for informing design of multi-modal sensors for harsh condition monitoring. Fabrication of concept sensors will involve use of thin film deposition laboratories. Sensor fabrication and thin film work will be done in collaboration with thin film experts at PNNL. Evaluation of novel sensors will require use of non-destructive evaluation laboratories and include testing and evaluation of sensing concept designs in a variety of environmental conditions.
Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.
U.S. citizenship required.
This position requires experience with acoustic methods, nonlinear acoustics, surface acoustic wave sensor development, and acoustic modeling. Experience in material science and acoustic/electro-mechanical modeling is required for design/development of multimodal sensors. Signal processing and data analytics expertise is needed for evaluating experimental sensor data.
Qualified applicants must have completed requirements for a Ph.D. in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related Science/Engineering fields before the start date of the employment. Studies must be relevant to acoustics, non-destructive testing/evaluation, materials science, acoustic and/or electro-mechanical modeling, signal processing and data analytics. Cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher preferred.

Hazards encountered will be relevant to acoustic sensor development and testing including use of lasers, high voltage, compressed gas, vacuum chambers, radiation generating devices, pressure systems, and high temperatures.
