Pacific Northwest National Laboratory Post Doctorate RA - Multiscale Coastal Modeling and Benchmarking – COMPASS Coastal Research in RICHLAND, Washington
Organization and Job ID
Job ID: 311895
Directorate: Earth & Biological Sciences
Division: Atmospheric Sciences & Global Change
Group: Earth System Measurements & Data
The Watershed and Ecosystem Science Team at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is soliciting applications for a postdoctoral position modeling carbon and nutrient cycling across terrestrial-aquatic interfaces (inclusive of wetland and upland systems). The successful applicant will be a part of a multi-disciplinary team of field, experimental, and computational scientists to translate the mechanisms that control coupled hydrologic and biogeochemical processes under current and future climate conditions into multiscale models. The successful applicant will be expected to develop novel conceptual biogeochemical models for freshwater and saline coastal systems, implement reactive transport modeling from reaction to field scales, perform model intercomparisons and benchmarking to evaluate model performance, and perform uncertainty quantification, sensitivity analyses and inverse modeling to improve model performance.
PNNL’s Coastal Observations, Mechanisms, and Predictions Across Systems and Scales (COMPASS) project is a multi-institutional endeavor focused on understanding and predicting the transformations and fluxes of carbon and nutrients as they are exchanged across terrestrial-aquatic interfaces. Field- and lab- based understanding is developed in close integration with modeling needs and advances. Research spans both seawater- and freshwater-influenced coasts. The research emphasis is primarily on terrestrial processes that are influenced by coastal waters. This project includes several national labs, and research institutions in both regions, affording the successful candidate the opportunity for exciting and diverse collaborations. COMPASS will hire several post-docs with complementary skills in coastal science, biogeochemistry, data sciences, and land surface modeling at all scales. The successful applicant will work in a collaborative team environment with scientists across PNNL, and other laboratories, federal institutions, and universities. PNNL has an extensive research portfolio in environmental sciences and biogeochemistry, hydrology, atmospheric sciences and Earth system modeling, including human systems and energy infrastructure. The successful applicant will be expected to present scientific finding at conferences virtually or by traveling when appropriate.
Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.
A background in biogeochemistry, computational hydrology or related fields in environmental science.
Strong verbal and written communication skills with proven capability to publish in peer-reviewed journals.
Willingness to work both independently and within a collaborative team environment, and proven capability to publish in peer-reviewed journals.
Experience with numerical modeling using high performance simulation codes.
Fluency in Python and R programming, statistical data analyses, and machine learning.
Experience with reactive transport modeling.
Familiarity with ATS, PFLOTRAN, FATES, or CLM/ELM modeling.
Experience with integrated hydrologic and biogeochemical modeling at the coastal interfaces.Experience with uncertainty quantification, inverse modeling, and model intercomparison/benchmarking preferred.
