Job Description

The Atmospheric Sciences and Global Change Division at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) seeks a postdoctoral research associate to develop new parameterizations for investigating the interactions between secondary organic aerosols (SOA) and clouds in the Weather Research and Forecasting Model coupled to chemistry (WRF-Chem) and the Energy Exascale Earth Sytem Model (E3SM; see https://e3sm.org ) Atmosphere Model (EAM) running at global convection-permitting resolutions. The incumbent will work on (1) improving process representation of the interactions of SOA with clouds and convection (2) Investigate new features with respect to SOA cloud chemistry at LES scales and connect these insights with regional and global models (3) Explore the use of novel machine learning techniques such as physics-informed neural networks in analyzing field measurements and model predictions of SOA. The incumbent will work in close collaboration with atmospheric and computational scientists at PNNL and various Universities.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.

Preferred Qualifications

Required:

  • A Ph.D. in atmospheric science, geoscience, environmental science, hydrology, civil and environmental engineering, or a related field;

  • Demonstrated experience in running and developing codes of atmospheric general circulation models (e.g., EAM, CAM, and WRF)

  • Demonstrated experience in processes that control the aerosol or cloud lifecycle;

  • Fluency in Fortran and Python/shell scripting.

Preferred:

  • Demonstrated experience in analyzing large datasets;

  • Experience with high-performance computing environments;

  • Experience with data-model integration techniques;

  • Strong interpersonal communication skills;

  • Ability to publish work in peer-reviewed journals;

  • Strong team player with the willingness and ability to work independently.

Ph.D. in atmospheric science, geoscience, environmental science, hydrology, civil and environmental engineering, or a related field.
