Job Description

The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is a multi-program laboratory operated by Battelle for the US DOE. The Chemical and Biological Signature Science Group (CBSS) is an interdisciplinary group of approximately 80 researchers who solve research and development problems related to chemical and biological detection and forensics. Much of the work is directed toward national security missions to prevent and counter acts of terrorism and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

CBSS is seeking a microbiologist or biomedical scientist with expertise in mammalian cell culture, cloning and cell line engineering and an interest in solving real-world problems in national security. The successful candidate will be a member of an inter-disciplinary team of scientists, engineers, and program managers and will be expected to build networks within and external to the CBSS group.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Applying cell culture and engineering expertise to various assignments in a research and development laboratory

  • Working in technical teams to complete various project tasks on time and within scope and budget

  • Recommending technical approaches and making technical contributions that may ultimately affect the direction of the research

  • Thoroughly documenting experiments and publishing data analysis methods

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with bacterial and mammalian cell culture

  • Experience applying cloning and cell line engineering techniques to research problems in microbiology

  • Experience contributing to peer-reviewed publications or technical reports

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Experience simultaneously balancing multiple projects and tasks is preferred

  • Experience working in multi-disciplinary teams is preferred

Preferred Education

  • PhD in biology, biochemistry, biomedical engineering or a related field. Cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher desired.

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a federal security clearance.

  • Background Investigation: Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter in accordance 10 CFR 710, Appendix B.
