Job Description

The Disruptive Technology (DT) group focuses on emerging technologies by integrating capability across electromagnetics, systems modeling, communications, analytics development, and systems design to serve as a flywheel for feeding technology advancements across the division and laboratory. Projects within the group range from mission focused, highly applied projects in support of national security to fundamental science projects.

The DT group is seeking a recently graduated candidate with a PhD in Materials Scientist, Chemical Engineering, or related discipline to contribute to research and development of applied computational phase field and finite element modeling. The position will be focused on supporting and directing ongoing efforts in the development of predictive multi-scale models, designed to reduce the time required to discover new materials, processing methods, and/or treatments for enhanced performance.

The abilities to multitask and to work both independently and as part of a team are essential. A demonstrated ability to analyze data and publish results is required.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Demonstrated experience publishing in peer-reviewed journals and presenting at scientific conferences

  • Excellent problem-solving and data analysis skills

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate effectively on diverse teams

  • Demonstrated technical aptitude in solid mechanics, continuum mechanics, finite element methods, phase field methods, and/or computational fluid dynamics

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously

Preferred Education

A Ph.D. in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering or a related field. A Cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher is preferred.

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a federal security clearance.

Requirements:

  • U.S. Citizenship

  • Background Investigation: Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter in accordance 10 CFR 710, Appendix B.

  • Drug Testing: All Security Clearance (L or Q) positions will be considered by the Department of Energy to be Testing Designated Positions which means that they are subject to applicant, random, and for cause drug testing. In addition, applicants must be able to demonstrate non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for the 12 consecutive months preceding completion of the requisite Questionnaire for National Security Positions (QNSP).
