Contribute to PNNL’s goals in catalysis as part of the Lab’s Physical Sciences Division (PSD). As a postdoctoral researcher in PNNL’s Physical Sciences Division (PSD), successful candidate will join a team led by Dr. Jian Zhi Hu to investigate the structure, bonding, and transformation of substrates in biomedical systems, catalytic materials, and energy storage materials (rechargeable batteries and oil shales) to gain a fundamental understanding of the underlying interactions and mechanisms. The successful candidate will extensively use advanced spectroscopic methods, primarily high-pressure, high-temperature magic angle spinning NMR, slow- or ultra-slow magic angle spinning, and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy coupled with theoretical modeling and other testing protocols to characterize systems. The team interacts with a diverse group of collaborators in the preparation and characterization of samples. This postdoc position will be primarily supported by an NIH Grant, along with funding from the U.S. D.O.E. Office of Basic Energy Sciences.

  • Conduct independent research and meaningfully contribute to team efforts

  • Lead manuscript preparation and maintain a strong overall publication record in the peer-reviewed scientific literature

  • Interact, communicate, and collaborate with a diverse team of research staff in the Physical Science Division and across PNNL

  • Present research at technical conferences and project/program review meetings

  • Contribute to the development of research proposals

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.

Preferred Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, or Chemical Engineering from an accredited program earned within the past 60 months or within the next 6 months

  • Strong background in solid-state NMR spectroscopy with at least two years of experience in high-temperature, high-pressure MAS NMR

  • Strong verbal and written communications skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Hands on experience with slow-, or ultra-slow magic angle spinning NMR on biomedical systems

  • Knowledge and experience interpreting and simulating NMR data

  • Strong background in catalysis including reactor design, testing, and other characterization (chemisorption, infrared spectroscopy, materials synthesis)

  • Experience with quantum chemistry calculations including NMR chemical shift calculations and reaction barriers

  • Experience designing and drafting laboratory equipment with CAD software

  • Experience with NMR application in energy storage and geochemistry

  • Basic computer programming and graphic design skills

  • Willingness to work in a cooperative, collaborative environment

  • Independent and self-motivated

  • Commitment to performing laboratory work safely and conscientiously
