Pacific Northwest National Laboratory Post Doctorate RA - Land surface radiation modeling in RICHLAND, Washington

Job ID: 309657

Directorate: Earth & Biological Sciences

Division: Atmospheric Sciences & Global Change

Job Description

PNNL is recruiting a postdoctoral scientist to improve modeling of radiation processes within the land component of DOE’s Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM). Most current generation global land surface models do not account for the effects of terrain features (such as slope and aspect) on downwelling radiation fluxes. These effects are modulated by surface cover such as snow and canopy radiation exchanges, both of which are influenced by the presence of aerosols. The successful candidate will work on a highly collaborative Land Climate Process Team (CPT) project. The candidate will be responsible for implementing parametrizations previously developed and tested in isolation to improve the representation of radiation processes within the E3SM Land Model (ELM). Working with PNNL scientists and the Land CPT team, the candidate will design modeling experiments, develop diagnostics and metrics to understand and quantify model skill of the new radiation parametrization schemes on land-atmosphere interactions.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.

Preferred Qualifications

A Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science, Hydrology, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Geoscience, or related subjects is required. Familiarity with climate and hydrologic modeling systems (e.g. ELM, Community Land Model) will be considered favorably during the evaluation. A strong knowledge of FORTRAN and working with Linux/Unix environments are needed.
