Organization and Job ID
Job ID: 309384
Directorate: National Security
Division: Signatures Science & Technology
Group: Applied Physics
The 4,500 professionals at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory provide a national scientific resource for the Department of Energy and numerous other federal organizations. Our world-class chemists and spectroscopists, along with a broad cadre of scientific and engineering disciplines, work in cross-disciplinary teams to routinely solve some of the most difficult challenges facing our nation. In the Applied Physics Group new opportunities exist for post-doctoral research associates to support research and development in infrared spectroscopy focusing on quantitative Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectral measurements, refractive indices calculations, and infrared laser systems. The position will involve FTIR measurements, single-angle reflectance methods, ellipsometry, simple transmission measurements and the use of BRDF methods to derive the refractive indices n and k . The impact of this research is significant and will provide opportunities to publish in leading scientific journals and participate in scientific conferences. PNNL offers a flex time policy that enables staff to work in state-of-the-art laboratory facilities and still find time to enjoy the Pacific Northwest region.
Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.
The qualified candidate must have an academic background in physical chemistry, chemical physics, optics or related field, with a research emphasis in infrared spectroscopy. The position requires a solid understanding of sample preparation for spectroscopic analysis, infrared spectral data interpretation, and a strong background in optical instrumentation. Experience in this area is required.
This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a potential future Q security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.
Ph.D. in physical chemistry, chemical physics, optics or related field with demonstrated experience in quantitative infrared spectroscopy, refractive indices calculations, infrared laser systems or Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The ideal candidate will have both theoretical and experimental background experience, as well as familiarity with data analysis and report writing software, e.g. IGOR, LabView, OPUS, MS Office suite, etc.
