Job Description

The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) seeks a Post Doctorate Research Associate to aid in the development of a new hybrid Fourier transform mass spectrometry (FTMS) platform and supporting technologies for applications in MS imaging, native MS, and top-down proteomics. We have a world-class high-performance mass spectrometry group, and this would be a fantastic opportunity for self-motivated individuals who want to continue learning and developing state of the art technologies for a wide range of applications.

The candidate will be working on projects characterizing complex microbial communities funded by the Department of Energy (DOE) Biological and Environmental Research (BER) Program. This position involves the development of matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI) FTMS imaging mass spectrometry for in situ characterization of lipids, proteins, and metabolites across heterogenous samples. Additionally, proteomics and metabolomics experiments will be used to validate and expand upon finding from imaging mass spectrometry. As part of these projects the candidate will gain experience in high-performance mass spectrometry instrumentation, tandem mass spectrometry methods (e.g. UVPD, ETD/ECD, etc.), and high-throughput proteomics and metabolomics workflows.

The results of the successful candidate's work will be used to generate new intellectual property, peer-reviewed publications, presentations at national conferences, and new research proposals. More details about the proteomics group in general can be learned at the web site:

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.

Preferred Qualifications

Candidates must have received a PhD in analytical chemistry or related field.

Background in imaging mass spectrometry and biochemistry is a plus. A strong background in mass spectrometry instrumentation (Orbitrap, FTICR, quadrupole ion-traps) is preferred.
