Job Description

A post-doctoral research associate position in the area of environmental multiscale data-model integration is available in the Scientific Computing and Operations Group within the Earth and Biological Sciences Directorate at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL). The successful candidate will develop multiscale data-model integration workflows based on existing high-performance codes for simulating biological and environmental processes across a range of scales from molecules to ecosystems and will apply the workflows to address science questions related to the biogeochemical function of watershed systems. The work will be performed in collaboration with the ExaSheds project (ExaSheds: Advancing Watershed System Science using Machine Learning for Data-Intensive Extreme-Scale Simulation), a multi-laboratory effort to develop next-generation watershed simulators. The candidate will also support scientific application of these workflows at the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL;, a scientific user facility sponsored by the U. S. Department of Energy’s Office of Biological and Environmental Research (BER).

Strong skills in executing advanced scientific codes and developing workflow scripts in a high-performance (massively parallel) computing environment are required, including experience using python and other scripting languages. Experience with large data management systems, data assimilation methods, and/or model coupling approaches is also highly preferred, as a key element of this research will be linkage of observational and experimental data with numerical simulations. The ideal candidate will combine strong skills and experience in scientific computing with domain expertise in environmental and/or biological ecosystem sciences.

The successful candidate will work as part of large project team and will be expected to perform specific technical work in contribution to overarching project objectives. Therefore, the candidate must be able to work well in a highly collaborative and interdisciplinary environment with domain and computational scientists from diverse backgrounds including computer science, geochemistry, microbiology, and hydrology. The candidate will work closely with and be co-mentored by a senior earth scientist and an IT engineer. The candidate will need excellent written and verbal communication skills as well as excellent problem solving skills. Publication of scientific results in peer-reviewed literature is an essential element of this position.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficient in one or more compiled languages (C, Java, Fortran, etc), and one or more scripting languages (R, Python, Ruby, etc).

  • Proficient in scientific codes and parallel computing environments.

  • Experience with model coupling, data management, and/or data assimilation methods

  • Domain expertise in environmental and/or biological ecosystem sciences

  • Ph.D. from an accredited program in Computer Science or a related field, preferably with application experience in computational earth science.
