Job Description

The Atmospheric Sciences and Global Change Division at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) seeks a postdoctoral scientist to mainly work on a project related to severe convective storm modeling. The postdoc associate will be expected to carry out high-resolution modeling simualtions with either global or reginal climate models to understand how changes in temperature, land use, and aerosols can affect severe convective storm characteristics. He/she would also be invoved in evaluating the performance of model simulations in simulating severe storm properties with observational data.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.

Preferred Qualifications

The candidate should have demonstrated expertise in convective dynamics and physics, and should have strong modeling and data analysis capabilities. Proficiency with FORTRAN in atmospheric modeling and experience in handling large amount of data are required. Teamwork and strong communication skills for engaging with project teams are essential.


  • Familiarity with numerical modeling, high performance computing, and analysis of the atmosphere and severe convective storms.

  • Strong modeling and data analysis capabilities

  • Ability to think critically and develop and test hypotheses.

  • Demonstrated record of publications in peer reviewed journals

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English

  • Ability to work collaboratively in interdisciplinary teams.

  • Interest in contributing to an active intellectual environment


  • Demonstrated expertise in understanding of severe storm related processes.

  • Experience with land-atmosphere interactions and aerosol-cloud interactions

  • Experience with computer languages usually used for climate modeling and analysis (Fortran, Python, R, NCL, Matlab, IDL, etc.)

  • Familiarity with Linux/Unix computational environments

A Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science, Hydrology, Physics, or related subjects is required.
