Job Description

The Biological Sciences Division (BSD) at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is seeking a versatile and skilled postdoctoral research associate to help lead computational research efforts in secure biosystems design. The scientist will work to discover the genetic determinants of microbial persistence in complex environmental conditions, develop novel biocontainment strategies through genome remodeling, and optimize the longevity of engineered functions in microbes. The research will explore data-driven discovery and design of complex microbial phenotypes by applying machine learning or other computational methods to data from high-throughput genetics, transcriptomics, and proteomics. The selected applicant will be expected to develop design algorithms from multi-omics datasets, independently analyze and communicate results to the principal investigator, lead manuscript writing, mentor research associates, and work closely with staff scientists in a collaborative, multi-disciplinary environment.

Minimum Qualifications

The preferred candidate will have received a PhD in computer science, computational biology, bioinformatics, molecular biology, biochemistry, biomedical engineering, or a related engineering field from an accredited college or university. He or she will have demonstrated the ability to develop, lead, and safely execute research projects. A record of independent contributions to research programs, experience carrying projects from conception to manuscripts, and potential for project leadership roles is strongly desired. The preferred candidate will have a strong publication record in a relevant scientific field and the proven ability to collaborate effectively on teams. He or she will possess excellent oral and written communication skills and strong interpersonal skills. Desirable technical skills include genome annotation, transcriptomics analysis, proteomics analysis, development and application of machine learning algorithms, and statistical analysis.
