Job Description

The Atmospheric Sciences and Global Change Division at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) seeks a motivated postdoctoral research associate to work on the computational aspects of aerosol and cloud modeling for the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM; see http://e3sm.org for more information), as part of the “Enabling Aerosol-cloud interactions at GLobal convection-permitting scalES (EAGLES)” project. Targeted at DOE’s leadership computing facilities (e.g., GPU-based systems), the EAGLES project seeks to develop scientifically robust and computational efficient parameterizations to represent aerosols and aerosol-cloud interactions with a focus on liquid clouds.

The selected candidate will work at the exciting interface between atmospheric physics and computational sciences. Possible assignments will include, but are not limited to,

  • assessing and improving the accuracy and efficiency of numerical methods for individual parameterizations and their coupling,

  • evaluating the impact of improved numerical treatments for parameterizations and/or component couplings on the simulation of clouds, aerosols, and climate,

  • speeding up code execution using mixed-precision calculations, and

  • developing testing strategies and software to ensure code trustworthiness.

The work will be carried out in close collaboration with scientists and researchers at PNNL, Sandia National Laboratories, and various universities.

The candidate should have demonstrated expertise in numerical model development on high-performance computing platforms. Proficiency with FORTRAN and programing experience with atmospheric models are required. Past experience in developing and testing E3SM or CESM is desirable. The candidate is expected to be a strong team player with the willingness and ability to work independently.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.

Preferred Qualifications

A Ph.D. in atmospheric science, geoscience, environmental science, hydrology, computational science, or a related field is required. Familiarity with earth system modeling and large datasets will be considered favorably during the evaluation. A strong knowledge of FORTRAN, C++, and working with Linux/Unix environments are needed.
