Job Description
The Applied Radiation Detection (ARD) Group at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) provides technical leadership and expertise with radiation detection technologies to solve challenging problems affecting national and global security. Projects within the group range from highly applied projects in support of international treaties and national security to fundamental science projects in the areas of nuclear science, novel sensor technology development, and machine learning algorithms.
The ARD Group is seeking postdoctoral candidates who will contribute to new standoff radiation detection and quantitative radiography projects. The successful candidate will be called on to perform the following tasks:
Use advanced modeling and simulation tools to design detection systems
Design and execute laboratory experiments and assist with field measurement campaigns
Develop quantitative radiography algorithms that utilize physical models to anticipate radiography system responses
Design, build, and operate experimental X-ray radiography systems
Minimum Qualifications
Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.
Candidates must have the ability to obtain a security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.
Preferred Qualifications
Demonstrated experience in the following is preferred:
Setup and use of commercial detector systems
Development of analysis algorithms for a variety of detection problems, including radiation imaging, X-ray and neutron radiography, and radiation detection
Nuclear data analysis and gamma spectroscopy
Radiation transport simulation and analysis with Geant4 or MCNP
Modeling of optical photon transport
Desirable Qualifications
Ability to communicate effectively via technical writing and oral presentation
Proficiency in programming (e.g., Python, Matlab, ROOT, C++)
Demonstrated creativity and highly developed problem-solving skills
Initiative and interpersonal skills with desire and ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment
Preferred Education
Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering or Physics; will also consider candidates possessing Ph.D. in related field with demonstrated experience in imaging/optics and related data analysis. Cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher preferred.
