Job Description

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral research associate with a strong background in atmospheric chemistry of organic aerosols who will develop and apply innovative techniques for analysis of aerosol measurements. The candidate will work on analysis of data collected during recent field campaigns conducted by the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) facility, and other complementary laboratory and field measurements.

Aqueous and cloud chemistry of organic aerosols is one of the least understood aspects of aerosol-cloud interactions. Our project focuses on analyzing aqueous and cloud chemistry data from several laboratory and field measurements. The objective is to elucidate new processes based on these measurements, and build cutting-edge integrative-predictive models, which will be used to understand the role of aqueous and cloud chemistry in aerosol-cloud interactions.

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated prior knowledge in analysis of aerosol chemical composition and size distribution measurements collected from instruments such as Aerosol Mass Spectrometer (AMS). The candidate would also be expected to develop process-based box models to understand and represent aqueous aerosol chemistry processes observed in the laboratory and field. Working in a highly collaborative environment, the candidate will develop their own hypotheses of aqueous and cloud chemistry processes, and execute a research plan that addresses those hypotheses. The position will provide many opportunities to interact with both aerosol measurement experts and atmospheric modelers at PNNL, and other national laboratories and Universities.

This is a full-time position anticipated to last for two years (contingent on performance), starting as soon as possible but no later than January 2019.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.

Preferred Qualifications

A strong background in aqueous organic chemistry of aerosols

Familiarity with Aerosol Mass Spectrometer data and other aerosol measurements

Familiarity with computer languages (FORTRAN, Python, etc.), data analysis tools and techniques (R, NCL, Matlab, IDL, etc.)

Ability to analyze a wide range of chemical and aerosol measurements

Track record of high-quality publications in peer-reviewed journals

Strong communication skills

Candidates must have received a PhD in atmospheric science or a related field.
