We seek an outstanding researcher with expertise in plastics and polymer composite materials, with an emphasis on understanding and predicting crack damage during slow crack growth in polymeric materials. The Applied Materials & Manufacturing Group at PNNL develops high performance materials and innovative manufacturing processing approaches. We work to reduce the impact of materials and their manufacture on the environment, and we also research the impact of the working environment on material performance in severe environmental conditions, such as those in high pressure hydrogen atmospheres. This position will support business lines associated lightweight vehicle components, energy storage and delivery systems, and other markets where predictive understanding of the structure and properties of polymer materials over their service life are of interest to the Department of Energy and other sponsors.
This position will be hands-on and involve sample preparation, testing, and characterization of polymers and composite materials. The position holder will prepare test items and build test systems for measuring the performance of polymers in challenging environments. Their primary responsibility will be to characterize material chemical, physical, and mechanical properties and to help inform models and methods to understand and predict material lifetime performance.
The position holder will:
Research, plan, design, and conduct experiments involving specialty processing or testing systems.
Collaborate with others to develop individual steps and combined processes for processing plastic and composite materials.
Relate microstructure and properties of materials to operating conditions and external environmental factors.
Analyze and predict material lifetime performance from experimental conditions
Document the results in reports and peer-reviewed publications.
Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.
Ph.D. in materials science, materials engineering, mechanical engineering, or related field
Experience in polymer and composite processing approaches such as injection molding, compression molding, and vacuum assisted resin transfer molding
Experience with design, development, and evaluation of advanced composite materials
Understanding of mechanisms of creep, slow crack growth, and fatigue in polymeric materials
Predictive modeling skills in lifetime material property predictions
Strong team player
Ability to perform work with the level of quality and timeliness to meet required project and client expectations
Appropriate analytic, task management, and communication skills (both oral and written) to clearly articulate research objectives and outcomes.
