The Battery Materials & Systems Group within the Energy and Environment Directorate of Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is currently hiring a Postdoc Research Associate to conduct research and development of Na-Metal Halide Battery program. This postdoc position is for a Materials Scientist, Electrochemist, Chemist, or Engineer with experience in ceramic processing, electrochemistry, electrochemical energy conversion and storage technologies, battery materials synthesis and battery assembly. In particular, the focus of this position is to provide technical supports to a growing team of scientists and engineers conducting fundamental and applied research/development in the field of Na-Metal Halide batteries. The candidate will participate to study and development of fabricating/assembling/testing of a battery or module. The successful candidate should be highly self-motivated and independent on executing the assigned project and will be responsible for the development of Na-based electrochemical energy storage technologies including materials development, device fabrication/testing and the final products delivery, in coordination with project members and the principal investigator.
Communicate with senior scientists to benchmark industrial partner’s hardware, materials, testing and diagnosis protocols and baseline performance.
Participate with a team of scientists and engineers to develop protocols for materials synthesis, cell assembly and diagnosis.
Identify and understand the battery reaction and degradation mechanism and mitigate problems that occur during the project.
Prepare manuscripts for publication and present the work internally and externally at national/international conferences and review meetings.
Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.
The candidate must have Ph.D. in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Physics or other related fields from an accredited college or university. Prior experience with high temperature energy conversion/storage device, solid-state battery, Na metal battery, Na-ion/Li-ion batteries are preferred. Expertise in the high temperature ceramic processing, solid state synthesis, inorganic synthesis, battery design/testing is desired. Experience in ceramic materials, cell assembly, and electrochemical evaluation skills is a plus. The successful candidate must have demonstrated technical aptitude in a laboratory environment, including electrochemical testing and characterization techniques, constructing experimental setup, operation, and data analysis, as well as a demonstrated ability in technical communication. Self-motivation, good hand-on skill, good writing/oral communication capability and an ability to collaborate effectively in a teaming environment are required
