The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is starting new and exciting research in the area of integrated coastal modeling with a specific focus on understanding evolution and co-evolution of coastal natural and human systems.
We seek applications for a postdoctoral scholar research position in hydrology modeling with particular emphasis on the mid-Atlantic region. This position will heavily involve hydrological modeling in high performance computing environment, including model configuration, calibration, uncertainty quantification, data analysis and visualization. Successful candidates will work with a multi-disciplinary team of hydrologist, computational, climate and marine scientists to advance understanding of how compounding extreme events, urbanization, land use and land cover change, and other coastal development control and modulate the coastal systems and processes, including coastal hazards, the land–river–estuary–ocean interactions, and the vulnerability or resilience of coastal systems.
The incumbent will prepare manuscripts for publications and project reports, develop novel research ideas independently, and present work internally and externally at workshops and/or conferences.
Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.
Candidates must have received a PhD in hydrology, water resources engineering or closely related field. Prior experience in hydrologic modeling such as DHSVM, VIC, PRMS, SWAT or equivalent is essential.
The successful candidate must have excellent written and oral communication skills as evidenced by publications in top-tier journals and presentations at professional conferences, and have demonstrated the ability to work independently and collaborate effectively in a teaming environment. Preferred candidates will have the following skills:
Familiarity with one or more complex hydrological models, DHSVM, VIC, WRF-HYDRO, SWAT, or equivalent
Familiarity with the Linux operating system including linux shell scripting, and high-performance computing environments
Experience with geospatial data formats such as netCDF, and geospatial analysis (ArcGIS, Python, NCO)
Strong skills in data analysis and visualization of complex simulation results using Python, Matlab, R or equivalent
Experience with developing or modifying codes C/Fortran90
Track record of scientific achievement in hydrology research
3.5 GPA or higher is preferred
