Job Description

Join a dynamic team of scientists and engineers focused on advancing waterpower and other energy systems where there is an increased need to evaluate the human dimensions of energy systems related to impacts on the natural world. The Operational Systems Engineering Group within the Earth Systems Science Division at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) seeks applications for a Post-Doctoral Research Associate position. The applicant must have interest and relevant expertise in one or more of the following areas:

  • Organization and coordination of scientific workshops and conferences

  • Development of engagements (e.g., workshops, surveys) with diverse stakeholder communities including industry and natural resources parties.

  • Energy development/natural resource issues and impacts.

Through their work, the candidate will develop an internal and external network of collaborators and project partners and participate in professional societies at the regional and national level. The position requires that the candidate complies with PNNL policies regarding environmental, health, safety, and protection of intellectual property. The position is immediately available with possible transition to a permanent position, dependent upon available funding and sustained performance. Ideally, the candidate has the opportunity to grow a research program.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.

Preferred Qualifications

An ideal candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to data quality and accuracy, strong written and oral communication skills as evidenced by scientific publications and conference presentations and be able to work independently and in a team setting. Additional necessary qualifications include:

  • Experience working with and organizing groups of diverse stakeholders

  • Strong written and presentation skills for diverse audiences

  • Understanding of energy and natural resource issues

  • Expertise in survey techniques and statistical analysis

  • Interview and survey assessment design

  • Excellent organizational skills

  • PhD in Human Dimensions of Natural Resources, Sociology, Energy Development or related fields

  • Preferred experience planning conferences

  • Relevant non-academic experience

Currently remote, but travel may be necessary. Although we are currently under limited operations, selected candidate will eventually need to move to the vicinity of the Richland campus to engage with local stakeholders
