Pacific Northwest National Laboratory’s Environmental Assessment group is seeking an exceptional post- doctoral candidate in terrestrial subsurface microbial ecology and biogeochemistry to conduct translational research that supports the applied science mission of the U.S. Department of Energy. The successful candidate will have demonstrated expertise in the remediation or stabilization of persistent organics, metals, and radionuclides in environmental matrices or engineered systems. Applicants are expected to have a working familiarity with the use and application of techniques for in situ characterization and measurement of activity in subsurface and groundwater environments, as well as an understanding of coupled biogeochemical and hydrologic networks that control the fate of contaminants in complex subsurface environments. Preferred qualifications include experience with analytical chemistry, integrated –omics and analysis of large data sets, and/or stable isotope probing.
The selected candidate will be accountable to the following:
Principle Investigators and Task Managers for performing assigned roles, following applicable project, field, and laboratory procedures, and performance of assigned tasks on time and within budget
The Environmental Assessment and Engineering Technical Group Manager for general staff performance and development, operational discipline (e.g., maintaining training qualifications, procedural compliance, safe operations), and promoting cooperation and teamwork withinthe technical group and projectteams.
Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.
Ability to design and execute experiments that couple microbiology and biogeochemistry leading toan improved understanding of contaminant dynamics or to inform remedial application development in subsurfaceenvironments.
Develop and demonstrate systems-based approaches for environmental characterization,monitoring, and remediation.
Contribute to the growth of new business development opportunities and capabilities for project and program teams
Collaboration with multidisciplinary research staff, and develop and maintain internal and external scientific networks.
Mentoring of junior staff, students and seasonal interns.
Establish and maintain high technical quality in laboratory and field research processes and products with assurance towards safe work conditions.
3.5 GPA or higher is preferred
