Organization and Job ID
Job ID: 310022
Directorate: Energy and Environment
Division: Earth Systems Science
The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is starting new and exciting research in the area of integrated coastal modeling with a specific focus on understanding evolution and co-evolution of coastal natural and human systems. We are particularly focused on developing new modeling capabilities to represent human response and feedbacks to changes in the natural system (e.g., changes in extreme events such as floods), including identifying and modeling patterns of change relative to population, land use and land cover, economic activity, and other sectors in coastal urban environments.
The candidate should be experienced in at least one of the following research topics::
Remote sensing of urban expansion
Remote sensing and/or modeling of flood inundation
Urban development/expansion modeling (CA, ABM, ML)
Agent-based modeling of coastal systems
Coupling of natural and human systems models
Urban residential choice and land market modeling
The incumbent will prepare manuscripts for project reports, patents, and publications and present work internally and externally at national/ international conferences, and develop new research ideas independently.
Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.
Candidates must have received a PhD in Engineering, Physics, Applied Mathematics, Geography, Economics, or similar field.
The successful candidate should have good written and oral communication skills and ability to work independently and collaborate effectively in a teaming environment. Preferred candidates will have the following skills:
Software programming in a compiled, object-oriented language (e.g., C++, Java, Scala)
Geospatial and remote sensing analysis (ArcGIS, Python, Google Earth Engine, ENVI)
Agent-based model development
Spatial regression modeling
Model Integration (particularly coupling economic or agent-based models with physical system models)
Scientific model deployment on Linux and HPCs
Version control systems (Git, GitHub)
PhD in Engineering, Physics, Applied Mathematics, Geography, Economics or related field.
3.5 GPA or higher is preferred
