Job Description

The Advanced Energy Systems group at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) has an extensive history of developing new processes and products for research programs serving the U.S. Department of Energy. The group is currently seeking a Post Doctorate to support the modeling and assessments of processes related to the thermochemical and biochemical conversions of biomass to biofuels, advanced separations, carbon capture, and natural gas conversions. Models range from unit operation levels to full systems (e.g. conceptual commercial-scale biorefinery flowsheets). Associated economic analyses include both capital and operating cost estimations. As a member of the group, the candidate will be expected to engage with a variety of scientists and engineers to help create and demonstrate innovative solutions.

This position is a one-year appointment with the possible extension to a second and third year. All staff at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory must be able to demonstrate the legal right to work in the United States

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Candidates must have received a PhD in Engineering within the past five years from an accredited college or university.Preference will be given to candidates with a Chemical Engineering degree.

  2. Candidates must also have experience with process flowsheet modeling for process development and/or system economics projections, preferably using Aspen PlusĀ® and/or Chemcad.

  3. Candidates must have a fundamental theoretical understanding of kinetics, process design, heat and mass transfer, chemical separations, and thermal sciences.

  4. Candidates must display outstanding ability to effectively plan, perform, and communicate scientific research; with demonstrated ability to conduct original scientific research and publish results in peer-reviewed journals.

  5. Candidates must have a strong process engineering background. Industrial experience is desirable, but not required.
