Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) and the Institute for Integrated Catalysis (IIC) represent scientific and engineering leadership in catalysis research for the nation and world, serving a wide variety of federal and commercial clients. PNNL’s Advanced Energy Systems Group has an opening for an Applied Catalysis Post-Doctorate position, aimed at heterogeneous catalyst development and testing for applications ranging from biofuels to hydrogen production. The candidate will work with the project to team to pursue structural and functional understandings of the catalysts, using a suite of state-of-the-art instruments and collaborating with staff performing the corresponding computational chemistry. Typical reactions include acid-catalyzed dehydrations, base-catalyzed aldol condensations, and hydrogenations. Multifunctional catalysts are designed to effectively control complex reaction mechanisms. Catalyst synthesis requires control from atomic to nanoscales.
This is a limited term employment position with a two-year appointment and possible extension to three years.
The candidate must have experience in heterogeneous catalyst synthesis; characterization, using spectroscopic techniques; and reaction kinetics measurements to unravel elementary details of catalytic reactions mechanisms.
Experience with a variety of catalyst characterization methods (e.g., NMR, FTIR) is also desired, along with experience with other reactions, including syngas and methane activation.
Excellent oral and written communications skills are required. This includes a strong record of publications in peer-reviewed journals and presenting at scientific conferences.
Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.
