Job Description

The Advanced Energy Systems Group at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) has an opening for a Post Bachelors Research Engineer to support their applied catalysis work. This work is specifically aimed at heterogeneous catalyst development and testing for applications ranging from biofuels to hydrogen production. The candidate will work with the project to team to synthesize catalysts and test them in reactor configurations.

The ideal candidate is a well-organized, self-starter, with a high capacity for attention to detail. Verbal and written communication skills, as well as strong time management skills, are essential in order to balance activities among several concurrently operating projects. In addition, skills in the following areas are desired and will be developed:

  • Ability to contribute to and follow procedures for operating test systems in laboratory fume hoods involving flammable and toxic gases and liquids, high temperatures, and elevated pressures.

  • Ability to following instructions and complete tasks assigned by staff engineers and mentors.

  • Ability to participate constructively and taking ownership in the success of interdisciplinary project teams.

  • Ability to document work in laboratory notebooks and recording and processing data acquired from testing.

  • Ability to write up research results and contributing to associated journal publications.

This is a limited term employment position for up to 24 months.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must have received a Bachelor’s degree within the past 24 months or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university. Minimum overall GPA of 2.5 required.

Preferred Qualifications

The candidate must have completed a B.S. in Chemical Engineering or a related field, from an accredited college or university

3.50 GPA or higher is preferred

Other Information

  • Laboratory work performed will include assembly and operation of equipment in fume hoods involving flammable and toxic materials at high-temperature (up to 700C) and pressure.

  • This position will require the ability to work hours beyond normal working schedules, including some evenings and weekends.
