Job Description

The Biological Systems Science Group within the Biological Sciences Division at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is seeking enthusiastic and motivated post-bachelor research associates to contribute to synthetic biology research. Applicants with interest in experimental or computational aspects of synthetic biology should apply. Synthetic biology at PNNL integrates high-throughput fluorescence, genomics, transcriptomics, and proteomics datasets to assess and optimize the persistence of engineered functions in bacteria. Selected applicants will work closely with PNNL scientists to construct and test genetic circuits, edit bacterial genomes, assess the effects of genome remodeling on cellular fitness and engineered functions, and visualize high-complexity gene expression datasets.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must have received a Bachelor’s degree within the past 24 months or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university. Minimum overall GPA of 2.5 required.

Preferred candidates will have a Bachelor’s degree in a life science or engineering field and 1+ years research experience in molecular biology, microbiology, engineering, or machine learning. Degrees of interest include computer science, computational biology, bioinformatics, molecular biology, biochemistry, bioengineering, chemical engineering, or a related field. Some combination of the following skills or experience are preferred: bacterial culture ( E. coli or other), molecular cloning (Restriction/Ligation, Gibson Assembly, Golden Gate Assembly), genome engineering (lambda Red, CRISPR-Cas9), cell density and fluorescence assays via microtiter plate reader or cytometer. Relevant computational skills are computer programming (e.g. Python, R, Matlab), experience working with Jupyter Notebooks or other collaborative coding notebooks with data visualization tools, or machine learning. Attention to detail, ability to work in a collaborative environment, and strong communication, organization, and documentation skills are expected.

Preferred GPA: 3.75 and above
