Job Description

The Computational Biology and Bioinformatics group within the Environmental and Biological Sciences Directorate at PNNL-Battelle is currently seeking a research associate. The candidate will be involved in cutting-edge research on metabolic modeling of cellular systems in particular for biofuel design, integration and statistical analysis of high-throughput multi-omics data (transcriptomic, proteomic, and metabolomic), genome-scale modeling, and machine learning. The position involves work with high-performance computing platforms, statistical computing, and data integration methods. The incumbent will assist in computational biology method development and validation; work directly with experimental biologists in interdisciplinary teams, and to contribute to presentations and journal articles. The research associate will contribute to large, multidisciplinary research programs focused on fundamental sciences and will be part of the Computational Biology and Bioinformatics group.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must have received a Bachelor’s degree within the past 24 months or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university. Minimum overall GPA of 2.5 required.

Preferred Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have an interdisciplinary background in metabolic modeling and bioinformatics/computational biology, biophysics, computational chemistry, synthetic biology, analysis and interpretation of high-throughput omics data, development and application of machine learning and statistical methods to optimize a given organism and/or communities for the efficient production of biofuels/chemicals. We are looking for someone with a biology background and some experience with artificial intelligence/machine learning expertise for multi-omics data integration to predict patterns/features that are useful for new experimental design.

Experience with cellular modeling and simulations, multi-omics data integration, and machine learning tools. Experience in Python or R and/or Matlab in a day to day research is required.

Candidates must have a major in Biological/Chemical Sciences, Computer Sciences/Math, Bioinformatics or a closely related field.
