Job Description

This position reports to the Risk and Decision Sciences Group Leader within the Earth System Sciences Division and involves collaborating with a team to perform routine functions that include gathering requirements from users, software design, development and troubleshooting, and providing input or continuous system improvements and daily maintenance and support of the software. Working under senior staff, this position will contribute to tasks related to software design, development, configuration, testing, and documentation. The successful candidate will support a number of projects utilizing multiple technologies.


This position will support other software engineers and application developers in the design and implementation of a diverse set of software products. The incumbent will:

  • Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams to define user interaction and workflow models for research and product features

  • Write and manage use cases that inform design decisions

  • Design innovative solutions to make complex information and interaction as simple to understand as possible

  • Develop or contribute to end-user documentation in the conversion and implementation of software

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must have received a Bachelor’s degree within the past 24 months or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university. Minimum overall GPA of 2.5 required.

Preferred Qualifications

BS in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related from accredited college or university program

Coursework and/or experience with one or more of the following:

  • Application or Web Backend Development using C, C++, Java, C#, or Python

Coursework and/or experience with one or more of the following:

  • Understanding of web application (full-stack) development concepts; software tools, methods, and platforms.

  • Version Control tools such as Git, SVN, or Mercurial

  • Web Service API Development using methodologies such as REST, SOAP, or RPC

  • Database development using MySQL, MS SQL Server, or equivalent

  • Unit Testing

  • Agile Methodologies

  • Web Development using HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript
