We seek an outstanding engineer with expertise in polymers and composite materials and a strong mechanical aptitude to join our team. The Applied Materials & Manufacturing group at PNNL develops high performance materials and innovative processing approaches for manufacturing. This position will support business lines associated with next generation lightweight vehicles, hydrogen-based energy systems, and other markets where improvements in materials performance are of interest to the Department of Energy and other clients.
This position will involve hands-on, day-to-day processing, testing, and characterization of polymer composite materials for structural applications. The position holder will support staff studying the strength and degradation of polymers and elastomers in extreme environments, such as cryogenic conditions or high-pressure hydrogen. The successful candidate’s primary responsibility will be to help characterize the materials’ chemical and physical properties and to support the development new materials and processing approaches that result in improved reliability and durability.
Candidates must have received a Bachelor’s degree within the past 24 months or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university. Minimum overall GPA of 2.5 required.
Experience in mechanical property testing, testing equipment, and data analysis; prior experience with polymeric and elastomeric materials preferred
Demonstrated proficiency in accurate data collection, analysis, and reporting at a level acceptable for publication in scientific journals
Computer programming skills
Mechanical drawing skills
Experience in materials characterization: DSC, TGA, TEM, SEM, DMA, tribology, FTIR, NMR, etc.

Good communications skills (both oral and written), including the ability to communicate clearly the goals, parameters, objectives and outcomes of the research work
Ability to work in teams with a diverse set of research staff, deliver on project tasks, and accommodate rapid and sometimes demanding schedules.
3.5 GPA or higher is preferred. Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Composites Engineering, or related field.
