The Applied Materials & Manufacturing Group at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is seeking a new team member to support and grow research programs in polymer composite materials. We research the compatibility of hydrogen with polymers and composite materials; recycling and upcycling of polymers and composites; polymer matrix-fiber interfacial chemistry; composite materials processing; and novel material processing approaches. Our application interests are broad but include materials used in hydrogen infrastructure and high-strength lightweight materials for vehicles. Our goal is to reduce energy use and to decarbonize our nation’s energy and transportation systems.
The hiring level will be determined based on the education, experience and skill set of the successful candidate based on the following:
Level 2: Building reputation through application of science and engineering principles and theories. Develops technical approaches to solve challenges. Builds a technical network within PNNL and teams with others to optimize research. Mentors junior staff and students. Receives guidance on new assignments, making preliminary selections on technical alternatives; independently completes recurring assignments. Defines and leads project work at a small task/project level, reporting results on time and on budget. Contributes to proposals. Embraces expectations for quality, safety, and security. Presents at national or international forums. Leads elements or sections of journal articles, reports, and other technical products.
Level: 3 Established local reputation and developing external reputation with specialization in at least one technical domain. Builds effective project teams internally and serves as principal investigator or co-PI on projects or tasks, while integrating capabilities of work team members. Supports scoping, scheduling, and budgeting at a project or major task level. Generates new ideas for proposals and business development opportunities while leading development of technical sections of small to medium proposals. Mentors junior staff.
Level 2 - BS/BA with 2 years of experience, MS/MA with 0-2 years of experience, or PhD with 0 year of experience
Level 3 - BS/BA with 5 years of experience, MS/MA with 3 years of experience, PhD with 1 year of experience
PhD in materials science or engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, or related field with 2 years of industrial or research laboratory experience, or MS/MA with 4 years of similar experience
Demonstrated record of publication in top-tier journals and an ability to collaborate and lead within a teaming environment.
With qualifications of that caliber, we prefer subject matter expertise in the following areas:
Industrially scalable processes for thermoset, thermoplastic, and elastomeric materials, such as compression molding, vacuum assisted resin transfer molding, pultrusion, HP-RTM, injection molding, preforming, compounding rubbers and thermoplastics, and state-of-the art high speed molding processes
Chemical compatibility and gas interactions with polymer materials
Polymer and composite materials recyclability or biodegradability
Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to work hands-on designing and setting up new experiments
Composite design, including computer aided modeling, development, and testing
