Job Description

The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is seeking a dynamic scientific leader with a national and international reputation and record of accomplishment to serve as the Director of the Physical Sciences Division (PSD).

The Physical Sciences Division Director (DD) is responsible for providing scientific leadership for the Division’s research programs and for maintaining the quality of research in the division. You will achieve this by collaborating with Division staff, the Associate Laboratory Director for Physical & Computational Sciences, Sector Leads for Basic Energy Sciences, and others to elevate existing programs and develop new programs in chemical physics, catalysis, geosciences, separations, and materials. You will provide strategic direction to approximately 300 scientists, engineers, post-docs, and visiting scientists, manage $40M research budget, and $7.5M operations budget.

In your organization role, you will be responsible for all areas of management within the division including operations, environmental health and safety, administration, budget, hiring, and employee development. You will establish and communicate policy, mission, goals, and accomplishments to division staff and to the broader research community. We work closely as a team across the directorate and the lab to assure efficient, effective, and safe execution of meaningful research. You will participate in formulating the research policy and strategic direction of the Laboratory as a whole and provide consultation to Laboratory leadership regarding new initiatives for the strategic direction of PSD. Further, elevating the visibility of our science of chemical conversions as well as its application areas by working with the Director of the Institute for Integrated Catalysis will be an important goal. Diversity, equity, and inclusion are core values at PNNL, and as a leader and hiring manager, you will model and elevate these values for your staff.

We value our Division Directors maintaining an active research portfolio as well as providing organizational leadership. You will be expected to build independent collaborative programs within PNNL and with other research institutions and encouraged to develop cooperative programs with industry to the mutual benefit of PNNL and its partners. You may also make substantial contributions to the formulation and direction of Laboratory programs that improve PNNL’s preeminence as a National Laboratory.

At PNNL, you will find an exciting research environment, flexible work schedules and telework options. We are located in eastern Washington State—the dry side of Washington known for its stellar outdoor recreation and affordable cost of living. The Lab’s campus is only a 45-minute flight (or 3-hour drive) from Seattle or Portland, and is serviced by the convenient PSC airport, connected to 8 major hubs.

We offer competitive relocation, health, and retirement benefits packages, including a pension plan and 401k. We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at our company.
