Job Description

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory’s Environmental Assessment and Engineering group is seeking to fill a summer only doctoral student internship. The successful candidate will have a combination of coursework and demonstrated knowledge with sustainability engineering and life cycle principles including but not limited to resilience quantification and evaluation (ideally with a background in mechanical engineering); openLCA software, public LCI database use, and EIOLCA modeling; coding of applications to assist with life-cycle modeling and evaluation; hydrological and engineered water system life-cycle modeling and evaluation; and nutrient flow modeling for life-cycle impact determination. Additional experience or exposure to tools and analyses applicable to methodologies used for resource characterization, resiliency, planning, and analysis is also highly encouraged.

The successful candidate will be comfortable working with a diverse set of research staff and project tasks, and possess the appropriate analytic, task management, and communication skills (both oral and written) to clearly define and articulate both objectives and outcomes of their research.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must be currently enrolled/matriculated in a PhD program at an accredited college. Minimum GPA of 3.0 is required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Contribute to or lead investigations addressing resource adequacy, sustainable engineering/LCA, and resiliency metrics when applied to natural and human systems.

  • Contribute to or lead in the drafting of technical reports and products in support of principle investigators and project managers.

  • Effective written and oral communication is required as well as strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate effectively on diverse, multidisciplinary teams.

  • Overall GPA of 3.5 or higher.

  • Monte Carlo, attributional LCA, and consequential LCA

  • Exposure to engineering/resource economics principles and methodologies
