Job Description

For more than 50 years, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory has advanced the frontiers of science and engineering in the service of our nation and the world in the areas of energy, the environment and national security.

The Electricity Infrastructure Group is looking for a university intern to conduct research in the area of control and reinforcement learning with a focus on application in power system stability and emergency control. The research focus would be to develop and test combined control theory-based and reinforcement learning-based control algorithms for power system emergency control. In order to contribute to these research efforts, a successful candidate would have research experience in control of dynamic systems and good knowledge of reinforcement learning. In addition, the candidate should be proficient in programing languages and software tools and packages for grid simulation, control, and reinforcement learning.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must be currently enrolled/matriculated in a PhD program at an accredited college. Minimum GPA of 3.0 is required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • The candidate must have a solid background in control of dynamic systems (preferably power grid) and reinforcement learning.

  • Familiar with power system stability, simulation and control.

  • Experience with tools, frameworks and algorithms used for reinforcement learning research such as Tensorflow/PyTorch, OpenAI Gym, OpenAI Baselines

  • Good programming skills with Python, C++, Java, etc.

  • Experience with power system emergency control is a plus.

  • Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering, Control, Mechanical Engineering or related field.

  • 3.5 GPA or higher is preferred
